Venus of Gavà, Neolithic period (6100-5400 BC) Site: Prehistoric Mines of Gavà (Gavà)

Rendering of a ceramic female figure which dates from Neolithic times. It was found broken and incomplete in mineshaft number 16 in the Prehistoric Mines of Gavà.

We may recognise eyes in the form of suns, the nose, a brooch in the form of a comb, crossed arms and a swollen belly, as though the figure were pregnant. It may be seen as part of a fertility cult or a mother goddess.
