The period from the 16th to the 18th centuries was of vital importance to the town. The extension of the town - which led to demolition of the walls - the diversification of its economy - with textile manufacture assuming an increasingly prominent role - and the achievement of a public municipal government laid the foundations for the industrial city of the 19th century
