The Great Day of Girona, Ramon Martí Alsina, c. 1862, preparatory painting, oil on canvas. On permanent loan from the MNAC

Together withThe Battle ofTetuan (1862-1864), by Marià Fortuny, the painting The Great Day of Girona, by Ramon Martí Alsina, contemporary of the former, constitutes the largest Catalan paintings on canvas, although it is unfinished. It is currently exhibited at the Auditori Josep Irla in Girona.

This canvas is one of the eleven paintings that Martí Alsina executed, along with numerous drawings and sketches, in preparation for the large-format historical painting on the Peninsular War. The painting, which straddles Romanticism and Realism, features General Álvarez de Castro visiting the battlefield on September 19 1809, surrounded by the city’s defenders and dead Frenchmen, after the besiegers’ attack had been rebuffed.
