Panoràmica de Sabadell (View of Sabadell), Joan Vila Cinca, 1910, oil on canvas, 55 × 512 cm

This wintry view of Sabadell by the father of Sabadell’s landscape painting, Joan Vila Cinca (Sabadell, 1856 - Sant Sebastià de Montmajor, 1938), is a striking painterly view of the city long before the cityscape theme was enshrined in Catalonia.

It is an unusual, disproportionately flattened panoramic view which was painted to decorate the stand of the Guild of Manufacturers of Sabadell at the Buenos Aires Exposition in 1910. This explains its unusual format; it was not an easel painting but a decorative and representative element which would have been seen from a distance in a pavilion. It also explains the fact that it depicts a theme that would have been uncommon in a purely artistic exhibition.
