There are still visible traces of the silver which filled in the letters and crosses, ringed by a corona or laurel wreath engraved with a burin. It is one of the weights known as exagium, used to check the weight of precious metals, especially gold. It is one of a set of official weights used after the devaluation of the coinage and Constantine’s creation of the aureus.
