We are now in front of one of the mosaics found in the Roman villa of Can Pau Birol, present-day Bell-lloc del Pla, Girona. The key to this mosaic can be found in the man’s hand. What is he holding? It’s a skein or an apple?, the experts can’t agree, even though there’s good reason to believe that the mythological scene described by the 3rd century AD artisan is that of Theseus and Ariadne (the piece would be a skein). Whichever it is, there can be no doubt that the meticulously laid pieces of the mosaic were part of the sumptuous decoration of the home of an important Roman family.
