Marble altar

Altar, Mas Castellar de Pontós (Alt Emporda), 3rd-2nd century BC.

Altar, Mas Castellar de Pontós (Alt Emporda), 3rd-2nd century BC.

Greek altar made of Pentelic marble (Attica, Greece).

It was found in the main room of a portico house, and sacrifices would have been made there.

The circular shaft of the column broadens at the base to form a wide plinth. At the top there is a Kyma decoration with lanceolate leaves in between the grooves, separated by the wood and framed with pearls. Some barely-visible polychrome decoration remains.
