Bronze bust

Bronze bust from Empuries (L’Escala) Dated between 79 and 96 AD.

Bronze bust from Empuries (L’Escala) Dated between 79 and 96 AD.

The lady wears her hair in the ‘wasp’s nest’ style that was made fashionable by Julia Flavia, daughter of the Emperor Titus.

The style consists of a complex rigging of curls which held the hair in a form of raised crown. The remaining hair, separated by a parting, is arranged into small but long plaits which are bound together in a bun, leaving the neck and ears exposed.

The eyes are painted using white paste with a black porphyry disc in the centre to imitate the cornea and make her gaze more real.
