Carlos Cruz-Diez, Jaune additif Denise “A”, 2007, chromatography

This piece by Carlos Cruz-Diez (Caracas, 1923) is made up of vertically drawn lines in three distinct colours: black, red and green. The proximity of the lines and the combination of the colours creates apparent geometric forms, amongst which we see an elongated yellow rectangle that cuts diagonally across the work.  If we draw closer to it, we can see that the yellow does not exist except in our perception, given that it is an additive colour. The juxtaposition of the narrow red vertical lines with the green ones creates an optical vibration creating the colour yellow in our vision.
