The second area of the permanent exhibition is entitled Palm work in the towns and villages of Els Ports Natural Park and tells of the different ways of working, forms of selling and destinations of the items. Direct sales, intermediaries, the exchange of goods made with palm leaves for food (barter), industrial processes and day-to-day use of the products all formed part of the life of those towns during the 20th century. In the second half of that century the introduction of minimal workers’ rights and new products made with cheap materials, together with the difficulty in obtaining raw materials, led to a crisis in palm work. Historical references confirm the antiquity of the craft, which fortunately has survived with us into the 21st century.
